An afternoon under the pines
Set-up forest picnics at Windmill Inn — one of the most peaceful picnic spots near Kasauli, perfect for families, couples, and small groups looking for a quiet day out.
Of all the things to do with family near Kasauli, this one takes the least effort and leaves the best memories. You pick a time. You pick a food order from our café menu. We carry the basket out to a spot in the forest just behind the homestay — and leave you to it.
Come back when you're ready. Stay for two hours, stay for four. We'll keep the café kitchen open for hot refills if you want them.
We have a handful of go-to spots in the oak and pine forest around Windmill Inn. Some are flat clearings under tall trees — ideal for families with small kids who want room to move around. Others are small ridges that open up to valley views — better for couples looking for a quieter afternoon.
All of them are a 5–10 minute walk from the property. Nothing strenuous. Nothing remote. You can pop back to the café for tea if the mood hits.
Solan and Kasauli have plenty of restaurants, plenty of cafés, and plenty of viewpoints you can drive to. What they don't have much of is a way to spend an unhurried afternoon outdoors with your people, without organizing anything yourself.
That's what this is. Guests book it thinking of it as a 'nice to have' and then tell us afterwards it was the best part of their stay. Kids love the freedom. Parents love not having to pack. Couples love the quiet. It's become quietly one of the best picnic spots near Solan we know of.
Note: we don't provide blankets, cushions, or folding setups — you're welcome to carry your own if you'd like to lounge, or pick a spot that's naturally flat and dry.
Food isn't included in the ₹500 setup charge — you order what you want from our on-site café at Windmill Inn and pay for it separately. That keeps it flexible: families with kids can keep it simple, couples can go a little fancier. We can also pack a pre-set picnic menu if you don't want to think about it — just ask.
