A walk through the village we know

A guided walk through the local village — farms, old stone houses, the people who've lived here for generations. A real glimpse of rural Himachal, and one of the most authentic things to do near Solan and Kasauli that doesn't show up on any tourist itinerary.

Home/ Experiences/ Village Walk

Most guests who come up to Windmill Inn spend their time inside the property — the rooms, the café, the lawn, the forest trails. Which is wonderful. But there's a whole village just outside our gate, and a lot of what makes this part of Himachal special isn't on our grounds. It's theirs.

The village walk is our answer to that. Led by someone from Windmill Inn who actually lives here — not a guide flown in from elsewhere — it's a gentle, unhurried walk through the lanes, past apple orchards and stone-and-slate houses, into farms where families have worked the same land for generations.

You'll see how terraces are built on mountainsides without a single straight line. You'll watch people carry firewood the way their grandmothers did. You might get invited in for tea (often). You'll learn small things that change how you see the rest of your stay — why roofs slope the way they do, what grows in which season, which wildflowers are edible.

It's not a performance. Nothing is staged for tourists. The village isn't a theme park — it's people going about their day, and you're walking through respectfully with someone who knows everyone and can translate where needed.

What the walk covers

  • A gentle 1.5–2 hour loop through the village lanes (no steep climbs)
  • A visit to at least one working farm — apples, stone fruit, or seasonal vegetables depending on the month
  • Context on local architecture, farming practices, and Himachali village life
  • Usually a chai stop — you'll be offered tea more than once along the way
  • Time to ask questions, take photos, and linger where something catches your eye

Who it's for

Travellers who want more than the standard things to do near Solan — the ones who'd rather understand a place than just photograph it. Families with older kids do well on this walk (younger kids manage it too, just slower). Solo travellers and couples find it grounding. Not recommended if you're looking for an adrenaline activity or a checklist attraction — this is slow travel, done properly.

Booking & pricing

The walk is ₹300 per person, with discounts on group bookings (4+ people) — just tell us the group size when you enquire. Best booked 24 hours in advance so your guide has time to plan the route and let any farms we'll visit know we're coming.

If you're staying with us and want to go deeper than just the view, this is the one experience we'd quietly nudge you towards.
