Sunrise from bed, not from a balcony

A lot of homestays in Solan and hotels in Kasauli will tell you about their mountain views. What most of them mean is: if you walk to the balcony and stand at a particular angle, you can see some of it.

We designed Windmill Inn's Deluxe and Super Deluxe rooms differently. The beds face east. The windows are big. The valley falls away below the room. In practice, that means you don't have to do anything in the morning — no getting up, no stepping outside, no remembering to set an alarm. The light comes through the glass and lands on the bed. You either wake up for it or you don't.

We've had guests tell us it's the first time in years they've watched a sunrise without trying to.

Sunset at the abandoned fort

For sunset, the best viewpoint isn't from the property — it's about an hour's walk up, at a small abandoned fort we guide our guests to. It's the finest sunset viewpoint near Solan, and it's part of our guided fort hike experience.

The fort sits on a ridge that catches the sun straight-on as it drops behind the far ranges. In the twenty minutes before it goes down, the whole valley turns amber. There aren't many places in Himachal Pradesh where you can watch that from the stone wall of a 200-year-old fort with nobody else around.

Which room for sunrise?

If watching the sunrise from bed matters to you, book a Super Deluxe or Deluxe room. Our Standard rooms are lovely — cosy, clean, full mountain access — but they aren't angled for the sunrise the way the other two categories are.

Super Deluxe has the largest window and the most direct valley view. There's one Super Deluxe room at Windmill Inn and two Deluxe rooms, so if this is the reason you're coming, book early. Our busiest months are April–June and October–November.

A note on weather

  • Clear sunrises are most common November through February
  • Monsoon months (July–September) can be misty — still beautiful, but less predictable
  • On overcast mornings, the cloud play over the valley is often just as good
  • The fort sunset is weather-dependent — we'll cancel if visibility is poor

Two different kinds of golden hour

If you're building a weekend getaway near Delhi or Chandigarh around one thing, build it around these two moments. The sunrise is effortless — it's literally included with the room. The sunset takes a hike. Both are worth the trip.
